Our Remarkables

Meet Jim

To design the future, one must be able to inspire with ingenuity and create new possibilities in an ever-changing world.

My name is Jim Steeves and I’m the senior manager of pipeline engineering in Wood’s Calgary, Canada office. I’ve been with Wood for seven years and have spent the last 30 years in pipeline engineering positions. The role has allowed me to collaborate on significant innovative, global-scale projects like the Pathways Alliance CO2 Pipeline FEED (Front End Engineering and Design) programme. This foundational project is key to helping Canada’s oil and gas industry along the path towards net zero, and once completed, will be the largest of its kind in North America.

As a born and raised Calgarian, I have been privileged to be able to build a successful and fulfilling career in the home that I love. I’m passionate about what I do, especially when my team and I get to solve the technical challenges of each project. Being part of the Pathways Alliance project brings an exciting new element as well, pushing the global boundaries for size and scale as we help create real change along the path to a brighter future.

Speaking of the future, Wood’s mission is to design the future. I believe that ESG (environment, social, governance) is critical for the oil and gas industry. Our work today is laying the foundation for future projects. This is the same approach I have taken with my contribution at the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The association is accountable for defining requirements to ensure all pipelines in Canada can be designed, installed, and operated safely. I was a recipient of the CSA Group 2023 Award of Merit this past June, which recognises individuals who have made an impact through outstanding contribution and leadership in the development and advancement of voluntary standards. I was recognised for my work on the standard for oil and gas pipeline systems in Canada. In addition to chairing the design technical subcommittee, I led the Hydrogen and Renewables Gas Pipeline Task Force which resulted in new requirements being added to the 2023 edition of the standard that was recently published.

I established this task force to ensure cross-sector representation within the oil and gas industry when addressing changes, making this a more collaborative effort on the path to ensure the the safety, acceptance, and use of hydrogen in the pipeline sector as an effective response to growing alternative energy and decarbonisation demands.

Being recognized for my work with CSA is a career highlight and will continue to drive my work going forward.

In my personal time, I enjoy being an active member of my community. I’ve been involved with Scouts Canada for 25 years, starting out as a youth before returning as a Scout leader, an experience I got to share with my son. I also enjoy photography, having had the opportunity to travel all over British Columbia and Alaska capturing bears with my camera.
