Gulnar Karimova is a graduate subsea engineer, based in our Galway office, but her career began on a different path.
I began my professional journey with Wood six years ago, joining as a junior electrical designer/engineer. During this time, I gained valuable experience by working on numerous offshore platforms in the Caspian Sea. Wood provided me with opportunities for continuous learning through various training programmes. Recently, I made a career change to become a graduate subsea engineer and relocated from Azerbaijan to Ireland. One of my aspirations is to fulfil my dream of working in the North Sea as a subsea engineer.
I enjoy coming to work work because of the challenging projects continuous learning opportunities, collaborative environment, ability to make a positive impact, and alignment with the company's mission. These aspects motivate me to bring my best self to work and contribute to the overall success of the organisation.
I’m currently working on the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim Project (GTA) located in Mauritania and Senegal, which is exciting because it offers the chance to contribute to a major offshore natural gas development. In this project, I'm learning about different types of offshore platforms and it's a chance to learn and use advanced technology. Working with people from different countries is also interesting and helps me grow personally and professionally. Most importantly, the GTA Project is committed to sustainability and responsible practices, which aligns with my values and makes it a fulfilling opportunity for me.
Wood’s mission is to design the future. To me, this means actively seeking out new ideas and thinking ahead to improve tomorrow. It involves being imaginative and discovering inventive solutions to challenges. Understanding the needs of customers in the future and being adaptable is also crucial. Working together as a team is important to bring our ideas to life. It's essential to consider the environment, promote inclusivity, and do what is right and equitable. By focusing on these aspects, we can create a brighter and more gratifying future for everyone.
I have a deep appreciation for exploring new cultures and experiencing different parts of the world. In my free time, traveling allows me to broaden my perspective, learn about diverse traditions, and create lasting memories.
My other hobby is photography. Capturing moments through photography is a creative outlet that I enjoy. It allows me to express my perspective, document memorable experiences, and appreciate the beauty of the world around me.
In the next 5, 10, and 15 years, my aspirations include progressing in my career, taking on leadership roles, and making significant contributions to the organisation. I aim to be recognised as a subject matter expert, expand my professional network, and pursue ongoing education and certifications to enhance my expertise. Ultimately, I aspire to achieve high levels of professional success.
