Our remarkable people make Wood what it is. Driving an inspired culture, performance excellence and profitable growth every day, our 35,000 strong global team are pushing the boundaries and making a positive difference to our world.
After starting her career as a welder, Alexandra Wichstrøm became Wood’s first female installation manager in Norway. Her role involves overseeing the decarbonisation and modification works on the Snorre B platform, which produces oil and gas in the Norwegian North Sea. By upgrading the platform's equipment and materials, she and her team are helping to extend its lifespan and reduce its emissions.
I was determined to work offshore because I saw challenges that I wanted to solve. Originally working in media and communications, I needed to re-skill, so I undertook a voluntary foundational year in welding in a workshop in Sweden, followed by three years of welding specialist training and further education. Two years ago, I joined Wood and within six months I was offshore gaining the hands-on experience I craved.
In my current project, I manage all the installations on the on the Snorre B platform. This involves removing and replacing 900 tonnes of equipment offshore. The platform was constructed in 2000 and is now ageing, so we are using this opportunity to not just fix corroded materials but also to add decarbonisation scopes. This will extend the asset's life until 2050 and make production more environmentally friendly.
I always knew I wanted a job that was exciting, making me feel like I was part of something bigger and giving me time to travel the world. My work gives me the challenge and excitement that comes with finding solutions. There is never a dull day and I love working with my "second family" offshore. We support each other and solve problems together, it's a great network.
However, when I started my welding and offshore career, I wasn't sure if I could do it. I felt like an imposter and had to take it one step at a time.
I am an avid mountaineer and I’ve climbed some of the highest peaks in the world. My work schedule of two weeks offshore followed by four weeks at home is ideal as it gives me plenty of time to pursue my passion. I have climbed with Kristin Harila, a world record-breaking mountaineer, and during that time, as well as being inspired by her achievements, I had time to reflect. If failing is the worst thing that can happen, then that's ok, because it gives you the courage to try new things and builds your confidence.
My mountaineering has helped me build the confidence to be a leader in a male-dominated offshore environment. Working offshore is like working in the mountains: both require teamwork, problem-solving and resilience.
I resonate with the way Wood invests in our people and projects for a more sustainable world. I dream of living more harmoniously with nature - that's the kind of future I want and I'm proud to help create that.
Wherever I end up, I hope to gain more experience, knowledge and memories. I really want to be a good role model in leadership, motivating and inspiring people around me to take small steps towards greater change.
